Finally, there is some style in the storytelling. “The Queen of Spades” (Pushkin) 39 Most of the time, however, Pikovaya dama is a movie of missed opportunities. One of the important scenes from Pushkin’s story that is skipped in the film (at least in the print viewed) is the incident at the funeral, when the dead Countess seems to wink at Hermann. The omission of this incident undercuts the supernatural nature of the tale. The film does show the moment where the dead Countess mysteriously appears at Hermann’s side to tell him the secret of the cards, but she simply appears and then disappears, with no style in the telling and no atmosphere in the setting, once again undercutting the mystical side of the tale.

There is no doubt that the creature is being played by actor Robert De Niro. The makeup on the creature is another missed opportunity. Neither the modern Prometheus theme nor the theme of man’s inhumanity to others is addressed in the film. There is a moment in the feature that almost addresses the latter issue, when the creature finally comes into the blind man’s 24 Classic Horror Films and the Literature That Inspired Them cottage to meet him, but since the scene is so brief, it has little thematic effect.

Stevenson warns that the evil side of an individual is the stronger of the two, with the good side always required to fight to remain on the side of the just and to avoid temptation. Although there are no Biblical references in the story, this theme of Jekyll and Hyde would make a good subject for a Sunday sermon. The weakness in Stevenson’s work, though, is that since Jekyll is a true 46 Classic Horror Films and the Literature That Inspired Them loner, he has no one to talk with in the story. As a result, there are no discussions of this theme of good fighting evil, or, for that matter, any of the other themes of the novelette.
